Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell – Keep It Greasy Review

Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovel - Keep it Greasy
Rise Above Records

Hard rocking filth mongers Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell return for album number three with Keep It Greasy. It’s another whiskey drenched release that is at least 40 years too late for its own good.

Think of the band as that first time you heard Captain Beyond when all of your buddies couldn’t stop talking about The Who. This is a hard rock album first or if you went one step further it would be a proto-metal album. But that’s just critical hyperbole; The Shovell are no frills and all kills.

The band thankfully hasn’t changed much since 2014’s Check ‘Em Before You Wreck ‘Em and with a track like “Hairy Brain Part 2” the band’s look makes a whole lot of sense. These are ugly dudes playing ugly in-your-face rock. Toss in the elements of tuning your radio dial on “U Got Wot I Need” ala KISS and Queens Of The Stone Age and there is a noticeable charm about the album.

“Paid In Full” has a monster riff right from the outset, and it’s kind of hard not to bob your head in unison to each time it plays through. About midway through the song the band launches headlong into some excellent guitar work from Johnny Gorilla and the bass comes up high in the mix to balance it out. Whether it be a sped up section of just another in the long line of flat out fat riffs, each hits their intended mark, hard.

If you are looking for a hard rocking good time, look no further than the latest offering from this audio time machine. You will likely be caught riding your chopper down the street, denim clad with mutton chops, but you will sound damned cool while doing so.
